University. It combined a conference and an exhibition. The conference sessions focused on the
five major ecosystems of Ethiopia: highlands, lowlands, forests, wetlands and the urban
environment. The aim of the event was to give an overview of the state of the environment in
these ecosystems, stimulate the exchange of ideas and experience, encourage cooperation and
networking, and reach out to the public. Participants came from different agencies and
organisations, including academic institutions, Government offices, non-governmental
organisations (NGOs), youth associations, the donor community and the private sector. All in
all more than 80 organisations were represented.
Green Forum 2006 was opened by His Excellency Ato Girma W/Giorgis, President of the
Federal Republic of Ethiopia. The opening, on October 2, 2006, coincided with World Habitat
Day.
Half a day was devoted to each ecosystem. Each presentation was followed by a plenary
discussion with questions, comments and exchange of experience. The discussions were
wrapped up at the end of each session. The way forward was discussed during the final session,
which ended with the preparation of a declaration summarizing the major recommendations
forwarded during the sessions. This declaration was subsequently presented to the media in a
press conference.
This publication presents the papers prepared for each ecosystem and the most important
questions and issues raised in the discussions, as well as the final declaration of Green Forum
2006.
